The Head of the Charles Regatta, an annual two-day crew competition, fills the banks of the Charles River every fall with tens of thousands of spectators, who gather in Boston and Cambridge to watch more than 11,000 athletes compete. Fans and observers crowd the Charles River Esplanade and Magazine Beach Park, shouting at and cheering on the rowers. But at 9 a.m. on Saturday morning, as rowers prepped their boats and got out on the water, the river was calm and quiet — a sharp contrast to the commotion that would follow later in the day.
