What differentiates psychology from psychiatry?

According to the psychiatrist Dr Marshall Hubsher, Psychology is a part of the Philosophy that deals with the soul and its manifestations, besides the study of the psychic phenomena. Psychiatry appears there as the doctrine of mental illness and its treatment.
From there, we can understand that Psychology is the science of the soul, which takes care of the social and behavioral aspect of people. Meanwhile, psychiatry is the medicine of the mind, which takes care of the physiological and chemical part involving the human brain.
We can note the main differences between these two areas in the studies and the focus of action. Check out more details below!

Focus of action

As Dr Marshall Hubsher claims, psychology evaluates and treats problems related to the mental processes, emotions, and behavior of the people. It is concerned with discovering the causes of problems, using as its main tool social, philosophical and behavioral knowledge. Here, the individual is analyzed in the context in which he lives.
The psychologist proposes to identify and treat psychological changes through conversational techniques, as well as helping to prevent them. All this without any drug intervention. The techniques may vary, depending on the approach chosen by the professional.
Psychiatry, on the other hand, evaluates and treats psychological problems by focusing on the organic side, through the physiological and chemical evaluation of the brain. The psychiatrist performs his work based on Medicine and Pharmacology, aiming to restore the hormonal balance of the brain and its perfect functioning.
The goal of the psychiatrist is thus to identify the psychological changes from a medical perspective, treating them with medicines. In practice, psychiatry is primarily concerned with reducing symptoms. Therefore, it does not investigate the social and philosophical side, such as Psychology.

Workplaces

The profession of a psychologist is regulated by the Federal and Regional Councils of Psychology (CFP and CRP, respectively). The profession of a psychiatrist is regulated by the Federal and Regional Councils of Medicine (CFM and CRM, respectively). Both areas require accreditation for the exercise of the profession.
According to Dr Marshall Hubsher, psychologists are professionals trained in Psychology and treat psychological problems through therapies. In this way, they usually work in private practices, hospitals, sports associations, the Unified Social Assistance System (SUAS) and several other companies. So they can help people in cases of:
• mourning, accidents, and losses;
• difficulties at work;
•relationship problems;
• anxiety, stress, and depression;
•educational orientation;
• search for better performance, in the case of athletes;
• analysis of consumer behavior.
On the other hand, psychiatrists have a background in medicine and medical residency in psychiatry, dealing with psychological problems through medication. With this, they usually work in hospitals, private practices, outpatient clinics and the Psychosocial Care Network (RAPS).
Attention: although most places are similar, psychiatrists do not usually work in companies, as sports institutions or in recruitment processes. In general, they can help people solve problems such as:
• chemical dependency;
• Schizophrenia;
• Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD);
• eating disorders;
• depression, anxiety, and stress.
