Four times each week, middle school e-learners begin their school day with a live-streamed morning show that is planned, produced and hosted by their teachers. From 9:15 to 9:30 a.m., the MME/MMW “Check and Connect Morning Show” team shares school news, such as announcements and opportunities to participate in activities. This, however, is no ordinary morning show. The team, made up of e-learning teachers from Minnetonka Middle School East and Minnetonka Middle School West, also includes creative segments about national day observances, student and celebrity birthday shout-outs, daily weather reports and sports reports. The show even features a cooking segment, daily stretching exercises called “Coffee with Mr. Bakke,” Good News of the Day and the Dad Joke of the Day. The show is “holistic,” one parent shared—students laugh, stretch and learn during each show. Through their live broadcast, the morning show team provides a positive way for students to transition from being “at home” to being “at school” together, despite being physically separate. “It helps me be in a good mindset when I start my day,” shared a sixth grade e-learner. The morning show also gives the teaching team an opportunity to demonstrate collaborative work for students, as the teachers partner together to create something fun and personal. Through the Check and Connect Morning Show, the middle school e-learning teacher team has set a standard for excellence in what it means to build connections and foster community in an online environment.
