Science suggests that the subjective state of ‘being in love’ is ‘addictive’ and ‘intimately tied to characteristic biochemical reactions occurring within the brain. These reactions involve dopamine, oxytocin, and serotonin and recruit brain regions known to play a role in the development of trust, the creation of feelings of pleasure, and the signalling of reward. In this sculpture I put dopamine under the microscope, transposing it’s unique emission spectra into the audible range. The cold, sterility and stasis of the sound juxtaposes against the warm and fuzzy feeling associated with love.
