TEACHING SUGGESTIONS

This song uses greetings from some of the islands in the Pacific, including Aotearoa / New Zealand. It was composed to celebrate the diversity and multicultural nature of our schools and country. Other than the Māori chant, the rest of the song is simply greetings from the Cook Islands, Sāmoa, Tonga, Niue, Tahiti, Fiji, Tokelau, and Aotearoa, New Zealand.

Before they learn to sing the song, play the children the instrumental part only and discuss with them what they think this song could be about. Get them to make up some body percussion patterns to get a feeling for the strong rhythmic drive in this song.

Warm Pacific Greetings can be used to welcome parents or other guests or visitors to the school. A karanga can be added to the beginning of the song to accommodate traditional Pacific protocols of acknowledging tangata whenua. Please seek appropriate guidance from your local kaumātua or Māori teacher.

The song could also be enhanced through the use of appropriate dance.

The languages of the Pacific rely significantly on the sounds of the five vowels., a, e, i, o, u in order to capture the unique sound of each greeting. If possible arrange for a fluent speaker of each of the languages to come and speak to the children, perhaps to share some stories of their homeland and assist the children with the correct pronunciation. Pronouncing each word clearly and accurately is essential.

It’s a happy welcoming song and the children need to be encouraged to make sure their body, their eyes and their smiles reflect that. A small group of children could make up some appropriate words for the chant and add some strong actions, perhaps to reflect the haka.
