TEACHING SUGGESTIONS
"Uira" is an example of a poem set to music - we have used Hirini Melbourne's dramatic poem about thunder and lightning.
The strength of this song is its rhythm and sustained dramatic mood. Before learning to sing the song, play it through for the children and ask them what they hear. If it was music for a movie what do think would be happening at this point of the movie? Because the powerful pulse of the song fits the subject so well, it can be a great stimulus to the students' imaginations. They could create a soundscape that could be played as an introduction to the song, they could write about their experiences of thunderstorms or choreograph a dramatic dance to perform.
Pull out the familiar words in te reo and discuss e.g.rangi-sky, ao-world/ day, haka-wardance, Tāwhirimātea-Māori God of the weather, po-night.
Listen to the song a few times and encourage the children to say the words with correct pronunciation before they begin to sing.
The song lends itself to haka accompaniment. Students could create one, reflecting the rhythmic patterns of the song.
Uira
Lightning and thunder,
The sky alight.
The world reverberates,
Provoking fear and awe.
Hot tongue flashing
as Tāwhirimātea performs his war dance.
The sky splits with lightning.
lt is night, it is day, it is night.
