TEACHING SUGGESTIONS

The class could sing this song together, or you could divide the class into two groups for a better effect. The song builds from a quiet beginning to triumphant singing at the end. As well as being moving and meaningful, this is an easy song to sing. Be prepared for the slowing down of the tempo at the end.

It is important, when pronouncing "Mā" and "te", that you have a gap between "Mā" and "te", as we have modelled in the verses. The word "mate" means death, whereas "Mā te Mahi Ka Ora" means "through hard work comes fulfilment".

The song is about waking up and considering what you want to achieve in your day. This thoughtful song can generate lots of classroom discussion about goal setting, working hard, or commitment. It relates to many of the work and study skills specified in The New Zealand Curriculum Framework and could be incorporated into lessons on aspects of Health and Physical Education in the New Zealand Curriculum. It will be a useful adjunct to teaching this curriculum's strand A: Personal Health and Physical Development.

John, the composer, says: "In each of my songs, I hope most of all that the children can relate to something within themselves."

Other songs John has written for Kiwi Kidsongs are: "My Dad loves His Rugby", Kiwi Kidsongs 8; and "Lost Property Box", Kiwi Kidsongs 10.

Other songs by John Phillips in this resource are:
- Lost Property Box
- Wobbly Tooth
