In this video clip, Dr. Elliott Fisher. head of the Dartmouth Atlas of Health Care, stresses that there’s no substitute for providing patients and families with timely and comprehensive information about care options at end-of-life so they can make informed choices that are congruent with their wishes.
Dr. Fisher argues these conversations must take place not only at the community level, but also between doctor and patient.
Later on in our interview - in commentary that did not make the film - Dr. Fisher also called the labeling of end-of-life care conversations by former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as “death panels” one of the two worst things to happen in American medicine in the past 200 years. The other? The entry of for-profit organizations into the health care field.
