One of the two films I am going to write about is 1917 by Sam Mendes. If I didn’t already know I wanted to be a filmmaker this film would have made me realise it.
It is without a doubt one of the best films ever made and unlike anything else I have ever seen before. From Directing and Screenwriting, to Cinematography and Visual Effects - it truly is a masterpiece. But especially the Cinematography was what made an impression on me. It supports and underlines each emotion, scenery and the story as a whole perfectly. My favourite scene is the one where the leading role runs through a by war destroyed french village in the dark. While he stumbles his way through the ruins the sky is light up by flares in red and green. Roger Deakins, the Cinematographer of the film, was able to transform a brutal scene and a story about war into an artistically unbelievable beautiful artwork. Furthermore what’s important is, that it is not just a dramatic story about war, it is a beautifully written story about actually trying to stop an attack.
The screenwriting introduces the audience to very interesting and diverse characters, each with their own problems and flaws. The realness and honest portrayal of these characters makes it very easy to identify yourself with them. 1917 is written with a seriousness this story needs, but also lightness and humour in the right moments.
All this is rounded up by great directing. I think sometimes great directing is, when you don’t initially see it during the film. For example what I really loved about this film as well, was the connection between the very first and last scene. 1917 starts with the two leading actors leaning against a tree and it ends like that as well. The only difference is that one of the characters dies during the course of the film and ends with the remaining one sitting at a tree, with all that he’s lost and the last hope to make it back home. Overall the film is an outstanding example of the magic the film industry is able to create and a great inspiration to me.
The second film which really inspired me is “Dead Poets Society” by Peter Weir.
For this film I want to focus on the Screenwriting. Dead Poets Society was written by Tom Schulman and is one of the greatest Screenplays in my opinion. Overall it is a great and dramatic story about the students at the Welton Academy, a private school in Vermont. Without too many words and without a too complex language, this screenplay is still able to achieve a deep understanding of the human soul. Especially the last scene is the most powerful and inspirational one. Todd Anderson, the main character, jumps up to assure
his former teacher Mr. Keating, played by Robin Williams, that he and his fellow pupils were forced to sign a paper which led to Mr. Keating being fired. Todd then climbs on his table and calls out the phrase “O Captain! My Captain!” This phrase refers to a scene very early on in the film where Mr. Keating himself jumps on the desk to shout it out during a lesson. He tells his students, that this phrase was written about Abraham Lincoln by the poet Walt Whitman. And additionally says that the boys may refer to him as “either Mr. Keating or O Captain! My Captain!”. It is a very powerful line which functions as a symbol for the connection between the students and their teacher. So the very last scene, refers to the earlier one, and has a very powerful meaning without even having to use a lot of words. It shows how powerful words, language and a screenplay can be. The quality of the words is more important than the quantity to achieve a deep understanding of what the author is trying to say. That’s why this film is such an inspiration to me.
