The inspiring story of two 9-year-old teammates, one Black and one Jewish, who make
it to the NHL against all odds.

Devante Smith-Pelly had a “late start” in hockey - he was 8 years old when he started to skate. But being slightly older did not deter him from wanting to stand out - especially as an Afro-Canadian kid. To succeed, he had to excel. Zach Hyman, his teammate, could relate. He did not know many players who, like him, were Jewish.

Devante and Zach played on the same GTHL minor hockey team when they were 9 years old. Little did they know that one day, they would both make it to the National Hockey League (NHL). Devante chose the Major Junior road, while Zach went to college. Today, their paths meet again as they line up against each other in the NHL. Two distinct journeys, 18 years in the making.

Dreams do come true, but not without adversity and perseverance.

93% of players in the NHL identify as white, and only a handful of players are Jewish. Despite increasing efforts to make the game more accessible and diverse, the road to professional hockey is often harder for minorities. LIFE & HOCKEY tells the story of two boys from different cultural and socio-economic backgrounds, and their families, who achieve their ultimate dream of reaching the NHL.

In the midst of several high-profile racial and abusive scandals the hockey world is at a moment of reckoning. What can be done to change the sports’ toxic closed-door culture?

With over 18 years of raw footage, the project takes viewers on an inspiring journey. LIFE & HOCKEY shows that with drive, determination, and resilience, barriers can be broken, and change can be made.
