Ray lived a completely different life before film directing – breakdancing, DJing and boxing as he pursued a Degree in Communication Arts, graduating with a Major in Advertising. Those days are gone but the intense work ethic and creative drive are not and continue to influence his style of cadential filmmaking today.
His career began at Reload, a Photographic Creative Agency in Australia. He quickly learnt on the job how to work with celebrities, actors, models and the client while setting up the perfect lighting and shot. After getting his foot in the door his affinity for commercials and music videos took over and he evolved. Using his networks from Reload, DJing and breakdancing Ray produced and directed an assortment of films and music videos. Ray’s ingenuity in maximizing the budget to create scale and a slick product was instrumental in winning advertising campaigns for Sky Zone and Powerade.
He relishes taking the audience on an instinctive ride of energy and movement having worked with parkour practitioners, stunt persons and professional athletes. He oversaw all creative elements of the campaigns and was asked by the client to direct their commercials in the US.
His dynamic visually driven signature that fuses strong cinematic storytelling with action sequences has also earned him international recognition, namely his gritty visceral music video “Won’t Fall” by world motion-picture camera company ARRI. Furthermore, his spot “The Flying Selfie” a face tracking drone camera is featured on Huffington Post and Daily Mail.
What sets Ray’s work apart is his ability to adapt a brief with his technical prowess for executing exhilarating sequences whilst directing a rhythmic environment in which the camera, talent and story can thrive. His aesthetic crosses between many genres; lifestyle, technology, fashion, sports and automotive advertising constantly evolving and shifting in the ever-changing film landscape.
Ray’s brand of film-making has propelled him to continually work with producers, production houses, advertising agencies nationally and internationally. He now sees the global market his playground.
