A good neighbourhood is like a ball game: in order for the game to work, people have to interact and get in touch with each other. The Superilla concept creates a playing field for the people of several residential blocks by banning traffic in that area. In Barcelona, this concept already exists. The boundaries of the playing fields are dissolved, and, especially on the intersections that are now free from traffic, areas emerge which are temporarily used for sports and games.

With the intervention "La Superilla juga", the Superilla enters the 2nd round. By advancing the concept, also the inner courtyards of the residential blocks are included. Opened and connected alternatively to the street grid, now, cross passes between the inner courtyards of the Superilla are possible. The ball is now not only played on the empty intersections, but also into the inner courtyards, caught and passed back: a back and forth between the neighbourhoods emerges. The intervention adheres to the following rules: The playing field, a system of platforms, builds on the existing courtyard structures without restricting their previous use. In doing so, it reacts to the architectural structure of the surrounding buildings. In addition to sports and games, there will also be places to rest and recharge.

Each residential block offers a specific selection of sports activities that make it unique within the Superilla system. The different activities are intended to motivate the residents of the blocks to become active in neighbouring courtyards as well, to play along, to catch the ball and pass it on: a neighbourhood has become a team. “La Superilla juega" connects the courtyards and invites people to play.
