Us Verses Them
“Faith activates God - Fear activates the Enemy.” -Joel Osteen
As they were going away, behold, a demon-oppressed man who was mute was brought to Him. And when the demon had been cast out, the mute man spoke. And the crowds marveled, saying, “Never was anything like this seen in Israel.” But the Pharisees said, “He casts out demons by the prince of demons.” (Matthew 9:32-34)
I remember growing up and playing a variety of sports. One part of sports that has always fascinated me is the fostering of an ‘us versus them’ mindset. We could not be friends with anyone from another team, nor could we help them when they were struggling in our battle. They were the enemy, always the enemy, and it seemed like no matter what woes came, the easy solution was to blame it on ‘them’. Our task was to overcome ‘them’ at any cost. And, most importantly, if you were not one of us, you were one of them.
As a culture, we have done the same thing in most aspects of our lives. Life has become one big ‘us against them’. It seems that anytime something happens that we are uncomfortable with, we want to have someone to blame it on, a ‘them’ who has created the problem.
This event in the Gospel shows that same mindset. Jesus healed people, those who were mute could speak, those who were blind could see, even the lame could walk! People, especially people of faith, should have rejoiced in His great work. Instead, they chose to say that He could only do it, because He worked for the devil. Really? Unfortunately, we often share this idea in the church today. Anytime someone does something for the Lord that makes us uncomfortable or is too different, we often attack them and make them the enemy.
My prayer and challenge for us all today is that we could rejoice when God restores people! That we could focus on the hope He brings for redemption and not try to create more enemies. What is God doing in your life? Who is He using? Is the end result more important than the messenger? God heals people daily, and we need to embrace the work and rejoice with those He touches. Love on in the way of the Serving King…
