Summary:
As a freelancer/clueless dude running his own business - I've been working from home for the last year and a half since leaving my job as an architect. So this "drastic" change that had everybody going stir crazy was not new to me. But I also couldn't write off this whole thing as not having any impact on me at all, but I couldn't put a finger on what that impact is. I'm a social butterfly, out with people old and new whenever the chance arose, but I'm also really good at entertaining myself in my "cave" where I run my business, make music and art, and lately, wrench on my 45 year old motorcycle.
I realized that what has bummed me out about this whole thing for me was watching my friends be bummed, bums me out the most. My support system is a large part of how I've gotten to any milestone in my life. The freedom of being able to go out and see them, laugh with them, felt the most violated when I sat back to think about it all.
I developed a close relationship with bicycles over the years, and got to explore every beautiful city I've lived in, on two wheels, exposed to the elements, the smells, the sounds. You let the adventure take you where you need to go. You might have a destination in mind, but on two wheels, you can pivot to any alleyway, any road you'd like between the beginning and end to your heart's desire. It's actually very synonymous to when you set out for any venture in life. There's a point A and a point B, and the road in between is never the straight line you might come to expect. It always takes you on unexpected courses, sometimes delightful, sometimes horrid. To me, it always represented freedom - the ability to go wherever I want, see whoever I need, and also, leave whenever I pleased.
I took these shots biking around my neighborhood with my best friend and roommate, speeding down the middle of streets now that cars make up much less of the population. The idea was to represent the speed, the motion, and the adrenaline that makes me feel the freedom when I'm on a two-wheeled vehicle - something nobody can ever take away from me. I wanted to juxtapose it with slow motion videos of a bike ride through Prospect Park (Brooklyn's Central Park) and my neighborhood, because while you're going fast, its also hard not to notice the city that never sleeps, finally taking a nap. Its a beautiful contradiction, and reminds me that its always a good thing to take a deep breath, and take a step back to observe.
Finally, the audio that is playing quietly is a snippet of a recording we made of a day when a group of friends and I decided to take a day trip to Storm King Art Center in Upstate New York. We make these recordings often, and in fact, have a ton of them. They're not recorded for any purpose, nor do we actively try to make anything with them (though we should!). It was a day full of laughter as usual with my close group of homies, and to me, its what ties the whole package together - to reminisce about those days, and also look forward to laying on the grass, laughing with friends once again, very soon.
I really hope everyone is staying safe out there, and busy as well! If anybody ever needs somebody to talk with, I'm happy to clear my schedule and hop on a call. We all need a shoulder to lean on, and it can feel like you're running out of air when you cannot find that. I'm here to help anybody, and pass on the lucky situation I've found myself in, not just during times like these, but always.
