Here's an animation I made back in February for the North Sea Jazz festival held in Rotterdam Ahoy. [Swipe to see the playback test]
We had a lot of liberty with what we could make (which also accounted for differences in skill levels, since basically none of the students in the elective studied animation). To get this done in the 3.5 days that we had, I used a cell-shaded 3D animation as the base on top of which I did some rough 2D animation to make to make it more expressive and less clean.
The animation was to be played on a massive (size of 2 tennis courts iirc?) screen at the front of the stadium, but the screen was also pretty low resolution. This meant that there was a restriction on how much detail the animation could convey on the screen, which is why I tried to use thick strokes and solid blocks of color whenever possible.
