What is the purpose of this exercise?

To stretch hip adductors – adductor magnus, longus, brevis, among other smaller muscles

Why would you utilize it?

We expect to have loosely around 30-45 degrees of hip abduction (bringing the leg out away from the body) which can be limited by deficits in hip adductor flexibility

From a performance perspective: Having adequate hip adductor flexibility is important for a variety of athletes like hockey players and gymnasts (among others) as they need to be able to separate their legs (like in a splits position) for their sporting demands. As for weightlifting – having enough flexibility here is important to be able to assume a proper sumo deadlift position.

From a pain perspective: One of the risk factor for adductor strains is reduced adductor flexibility while one of the important things to address following an adductor strain is restoring normative adductor length. So, whether rehabbing back from an adductor injury or seeking to reduce risk of one (in sports like hockey) this will likely be beneficial
