Many of our JDM Sport Utility imports had a similar US model; for instance, the Hilux had the 4Runner and the Pajero had the Montero. For those who prize something way more unique and special, this 1991 Toyota Land Cruser Prado SX might suit the bill. The paint has been redone in a custom Brilliant Black, which highlights the angular body styling. An abundance of chrome brightwork and oversized rolling stock create an imposing demeanor and allude to these vehicles overwhelming off-road capabilities. This is a 28-year-old vehicle after all so the normal scuffs and dings that go along with daily use are still present, but the bodywork doesn't have any glaring flaws. However, as any true enthusiast will tell you, these trucks are valued for their unstoppable turbo diesel engines and rugged 4WD system.

The most surprising attribute of this generation Prado was the astounding level of equipment. You might expect a spartan interior since the exterior looks a bit like an FJ40, but power equipment and creature comforts surround all three rows. Upon climbing up to the spacious cockpit a couple of things are tough to miss. Custom leather seat covers to protect the factory blue and gray Alcantara. Subtle white stitching highlights the quality of these units, and the front captain's chairs are quite comfy. The driver benefits from a slate of power accessories including power windows, locks, and mirrors, as well as a manual tilt wheel. A newer wood grain and leather Land Cruiser steering wheel have been swapped in to add a bit more premium feel. Skinny A-pillars and a low slung dash provider great visibility upfront, and the large side glass makes lane changes easy. Generally, the command of the road is a nice change of pace from the low slung sports cars we normally retail, and you can see past the traffic immediately in front of you. A gauge suite including altimeter, thermometer, pitch, and roll indicators. Toyota even included an OEM digital stopwatch function so you could tell how quickly you completed the Baja 1000. Joking aside, the plastics and headliner are in good shape, as are the charcoal-colored carpets. An optional and operational sunroof assembly opens up the cabin to more ventilation with its slide and retractable settings. While not in use, the natural light it let's through makes the interior feel larger. The A/C and audio systems are in good nick, and a Bluetooth capable Pioneer head unit being stalled over in Japan along with updated Alpine speakers. The middle bench has been taken care of well over the years and includes the same custom leather seat covers to match the fronts. The headroom is impressive as is the shoulder room, but if hauling a total of seven passengers is required, this truck has a trick up its sleeve. Folding down from the D-Pillar, two jump seats can be used when necessary. When folded away, the split-barn door tailgate is ideal for swallowing wider stowage items. As a final aesthetic, yet functional touch, privacy tint is affixed to all the rear windows, obscuring prying eyes and keeping interior temps down.

The engine used in this platform is one of Toyota's most durable, a 2.5L turbo-diesel four-banger. It feels strong and pulls hard, which is to be expected with only 73K verified miles on the chassis. This 2L-TE powered truck includes some serious running gear for an excursion off the beaten path. Located on the dash, an electronic Hub-Lock switch ensures maximum traction in less than ideal conditions. The selective 4WD system does have a low gear as well, but as mentioned, it's awful tough to get this thing stuck. Benefitting from a fresh oil and filter service, the 2446cc mill creates sumptuous true, and gets this brick up too and above highways speed easily. A light lift brings up the ride height a touch, and this '91 handles large and small bumps handily and has ample ground clearance. The brakes are in good working order and bring this hauler down to manageable speed despite plenty of unsprung weight. The steering is power-assisted, and light, which makes for low-stress parking jobs. The black, aftermarket alloys are all shod with new Otsu oversized tires, ready to handle gravel, tarmac, sand, and snow.

Embrace your inner Rambo, this imposing Ute is up to date on maintenance and ready to roll. Off-road or on, the Landcruiser makes a statement and is certainly a Japanese Classic.
