The Center for 21st Century Studies, commonly known as C21, is a research center at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee that supports new interdisciplinary scholarship and contemporary work at the intersection of the humanities, arts, and social sciences.
In focusing on 21st-century studies, C21 fosters contemporary thought and criticism in ways that are engaging to scholars, artists, and community members from a wide range of intellectual projects.
Each spring, The Center holds an annual conference that brings together scholars from around the world to discuss key concepts that help us better understand our contemporary era. And it is this study of the current century – the 21st century – that guides and defines the Center’s work.
21st Century Studies is not confined to a single field or discipline. Rather, the study of the 21st century is a mode of inquiry: a way of asking questions, of pursuing research, of disseminating findings, of collectively imagining our future into being.
For over fifty years, The Center – as both a physical place and a gathering of ideas – has served as a site where scholars could pursue cutting edge theoretical and interdisciplinary work in the arts, humanities, and social sciences.
As the dividing lines between science, technology, art, society, and culture become increasingly blurred, The Center examines how our emerging 21st century asks us rethink the boundaries and definitions of our sensible, social, and political worlds.
It is a place to consider how ideas like feminism, digitality, the Anthropocene, terror, extinction, insecurity, and the nonhuman afford different ways of thinking through the space and time of our shared century.
In doing so, The Center seeks to imagine, define, and create not only the emerging field of 21st century studies, but also the emerging 21st century. This is the work of The Center: to create a space for critical inquiry into the past, present, and future of the 21st century.
