[Katzen] Baptist Health Innovations was created in 2017. After 30 years of clinical innovation, I became very interested in creating a process of innovation for the entire health system. It became pretty apparent that innovation could drive improvement in healthcare but also might be able to provide an alternative revenue source for the organization. Innovation is a direct benefit to the patients we treat as a result of the fact that we're delivering the best quality care and improving care all the time.

[Bhakuni] As an employee, innovation empowers you to create and make a difference. You can learn and grow by experiencing commercialization and making an impact. You can also share in remuneration as an individual and for your department.

[Katzen] We believe really strongly that ideas can come from anywhere. You can be a physician, a nurse, you could be a transporter, somebody in the pastoral part of our organization, literally anywhere. And we want all of our employees to be thinking about new and innovative ways for either processes, gadgets, widgets, devices, apps, almost anything that our innovation infrastructure will then be able to take and develop.

[Bhakuni] Baptist Health Innovations has developed four pillars that guide our activities. Technology management involves assessing new ideas, protecting and developing them, which includes research results, data know-how by licensing and starting new companies when appropriate. Corporate development involves structuring collaborations with commercial and academic entities to develop new products and services. Global programs involves licensing our operational infrastructure and know-how globally and bringing in new technologies to the U.S.. And applied research and education involves educating our community, providing resources and programs to our researchers, employees, and stakeholders like our fellowship and competitions to advance healthcare technology innovation.

[Katzen] One of the great benefits of Baptist Health Innovations would be to change culture in the organization.
