This is a song about the experience of "passing the rock" in the California Wind Children, a youth group centered in Novato, California from 1975 to 1983. A part of communion and community sharing and healing, The Rock was passed in the group as a way of sharing what the teens were thinking, feeling, or experiencing in a safe space without interruption or judgment. It was a bonding and healing moment for this group that ranged in size from 15 to over 100 teens and young adults on their musical tours across the US, and into Europe and the British Isles in 1978 and 1982, with scheduled work projects each summer.

Our experiences with "passing The Rock" can extend to our daily interactions with each other in the real world, in learning how to listen openly and without judgment, and to share our true thoughts and feelings in a more heart-focused and open way.

Fifty of us made a circle on the grass
I saw you near then watched you move away
I didn’t stop to wonder, didn’t need to ask
What it was that made you feel that way

A man produced a stone and held it in his hands
Rough hewn, with a cross worn deeply in
He spoke the invitation to say just what you can
Passed it on and said, “Now let's begin”

It’s a sacred circle and a scary time
We’ve known that this was coming for a while
We all get weary and need to unwind
And we need this conversation, and to stop procrastination
Let's pass The Rock and pass the peaceful mind

I watched The Rock be passed along from hand to hand
With a sigh and quiet focus every time,
The bearer of The Rock could pass or take a stand,
To speak what's on their heart and on their mind

When the rock reached me, I almost passed it on
Not sure how to say what hurt the most
But as it's cool weight grounded me, The Rock was calm
Suddenly the truth was very close

It’s a sacred circle and a special time
We’ve known that this was coming for a while
We all get weary and need to remind
That we need this conversation, and no more procrastination
Let's pass The Rock and pass the caring mind

As The Rock wound round the circle
Healing wove right through us like a wave Mmm
The Rock passing between us
Linked the hands along the path that it made

I looked down and traced the carving with my thumb
So worn and smooth ‘cause we all do the same
I talked about my sorrow at the rift that had begun
Between me and the one I didn’t name

Keeping my head bowed my tears fell on The Rock
Like the stream of words from somewhere deep within
I glanced at you in hope you would accept my heart
And saw in your eyes love didn't end

'Cause it’s a sacred circle and a healing time
We’ve known that this was coming for a while
We all get weary and sometimes we need a sign
To have this conversation, And to stop procrastination
So let's pass The Rock and pass the loving mind
Yeah, let's pass The Rock and pass the loving mind
