Germany’s biggest open-water swimming relay combines leisure sports and scientific research, oceans and landlocked country, the past and the future in an unprecedented way. Under the slogan “The ocean starts here!” the Elbe is divided into 19 stages over 575 km that 262 swimmers complete to set an example for the protection of oceans and rivers. Amateur swimmers apply for partial routes; in addition, world-class athletes attract media attention by taking part. As well as the campaign raft as starting and finishing location, scientists from Berlin, Karlsruhe and Dresden research on a separate boat on water quality, microplastics and flood risks.
The relay is cheered all along the route; municipalities, research bodies, environmental associations and NGOs are mobilised and, in turn, mobilise citizens to help protect waters. Within four months, there are more than 1,000 articles in the national and international media; plus innumerable posts, tweets and likes in the social networks.
