The Divine Sewing Machine - Dance Theatre with 13 Children
2018 Version @ Shanghai International Dance Center - Experimental Theater

Introduction

13 children are the protagonists of this dance theatre. The work is inspired by ‘Lang Du Qiang’, a form of reading aloud in class and in public with taught, rehearsed emotions. This traditional form of education is still widely practiced in China today. The work is not meant to be a social critique but rather to invite children to explore their individual ways of speaking and performing on the stage by dancing, game playing in a soundscape of its own.

The text of the play is adapted from Samuel Beckett’s “Waiting for Godot”, mainly based on the dialogues between Vladimir and Estragon.

I’m collaborating with Wang Mengfan in the theatre field since 2015, she’s a director and choreographer studying in Cologne. Her work features the common bodies of common people in China.

When working with her, I’m exploring more organic sounds by found objects that have relations to the motif, such as sea snail, metronome, train, so on. Also the context between found objects and abstract sounds made by electronic music tools, and the way for me to interactive with the whole theatre environment.
