The Bass x Daata are pleased to present new artist commissions by Miami-based artists Leo Castañeda and Cara Despain.
Leo Castañeda’s Experiential Trailer 03: Levels & Bosses, (2021) traverses sci-fi gaming environments inspired by 18th century Romantic painting, Latin American abstraction, and the liminal landscapes of Colombia and the Brazilian Amazon. A prototype trailer for Castañeda’s soon to launch Levels&Bosses—a video game following The-Other on a quest to understand their power after a cataclysmic explosion—Experiential Trailer 03 is part of a greater body of work exploring post-human anatomies and interactions through a game transmedia mythology. Mutating between analog and digital, Levels & Bosses renders worlds where landscapes, technology, and entities all share sentience and interconnection.
Cara Despain’s newly commissioned video 'test of faith' uses recently restored and digitized films of nuclear weapons tests at the Nevada Test Site from 1951-62 that further her artistic research on the far-reaching implications of the legacy of nuclear testing. Altering the images of the fireballs and atomic clouds to create Rorschach test-like imagery, Despain obscures the iconic military and cultural propaganda images of mushroom clouds—that were widely utilized by Hollywood, sci-fi books, and punk bands—into a psychological, hypnotic meditation on the precarious present and future of militarism and weapons-development.
