Ara Broadcasting School's MetroNews caught up with the Tamai Sports Programme - the programme teaches rugby and touch skills to approximately 65 children from Christchurch East aged 9-13, who wouldn’t otherwise have the opportunity to play sport, due to socio-economic barriers. Alongside the sport, the participants benefit in many ways including teamwork and leadership skills, cultural identity learning, nutrition education and the provision of free health checks and vaccinations through He Waka Tapu. The programme also has wider benefits to tamariki’s overall learning in the classroom via improved behaviours and stronger engagement with the curriculum. The programme carries no cost to the children or their whānau.

Our vision for Tamai Sports is to support healthier children and healthier communities by enabling participation in rugby and learning in Christchurch East. We do this by providing a safe and positive social and culturally appropriate experience for the tamariki, whānau and schools where the outcomes live long after the programme has finished.

The programme is already supported by Rātā Foundation, the CRFU, Sport Canterbury and Te Putahitanga.
