Using the phenakistoscope as a basis for exploration, Julia Matsumoto explores duration, time, and everyday objects.

It feels all too often that we let time go, that we blame time for not giving enough to us. Animation gives time to objects and reveals the commanding beauty of their cyclical markers. I want to encounter objects and their durations differently. My work, Recurrence, highlights everyday time by isolating a water stream, a pillow, a plant, and phrases and situating them in a phenakistoscope – an object of animation developed before our digital world. Feeling and unfeeling the meaning of such everyday materials by animating them with an older technology allow for a historical interplay back and forth and through different times.
