Dans son travail récent, Michael Merrill prolonge son plaisir en scrutant les assises du monde de l’art. Grâce aux moyens traditionnels de l’art et ses tours de mains techniques, le processus devient le produit, sa matière prend forme, la syntaxe fait sens.

La suite des quatre tableaux de “L’usine à peinture” explore la fabrique de la peinture à l’huile.

Documentation à l’appui sur les étapes de sa fabrication - fournie par une usine de peinture - les tableaux affichent une même image, réalisée en couleurs variées - blanc et couleurs primaires, jaune, rouge et bleu. Issues de l’image-source, les œuvres vont s’en éloigner progressivement et, de plus en plus, les tableaux, tout en soutenant leur thème, vont se raffiner grâce à l’interprétation inventive.

Paint Factory
Michael Merrill’s recent project is a continuation of his playful examination of the underpinnings of the art world. Using traditional visual art media and sleight-of-hand technique, he transforms process into product, ground into form and syntax into significance.

The Paint Factory project consists of a series of four paintings about the manufacturing of oil paint. Based upon documentation gathered in a paint factory, of the process of making oil paints, the paintings depict the same image rendered on a different coloured ground – white plus the primary colours, yellow, red and blue. Using the proceeding one as the model, the works become progressively further removed from the source image. While retaining their subject, they become more distilled and open to interpretation and invention.
