The Zappa Lab of Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory (LDEO) of Columbia University is on the R/V Falkor Northeast of Fiji in ocean conditions studying the impact of cyanobacteria on the ocean surface heat budget in November 2019. As part of this science expedition, we’re testing new capabilities of high-endurance hybrid fixed wing vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) for oceanographic applications from research vessels. The Zappa Lab of LDEO owns three L3 Harris model HQ-90s UAVs and operates them in conjunction with L3 Harris AS&T Tucson. Yesterday, we achieved a significant milestone in unmanned aerial systems (UAS) flight. We succeeded in the first fully-autonomous deployment of a hybrid-VTOL fixed winged UAV from a moving ship on the open ocean. Fully-autonomous describes no manual piloting of the aircraft, with take off, flight and landing completely operated by the UAS ground station.
