Résister à « l’avenir du travail » : construire un avenir pour les travailleuses et les travailleurs

Le discours sur « l’avenir du travail » repose sur un déterminisme autoritaire, sur l’idée maintes fois ressassée qu’il serait impossible d’exercer un contrôle démocratique, qu’il soit économique ou social, sur la technologie. La plupart des économistes reconnaissent, voire déplorent la « destruction créatrice » schumpétérienne engendrée par la fissuration, l’automatisation, l’économie à la demande et de plateforme, les plans de travail sur demande et la gestion par algorithmes et par surveillance. Ils la constatent cependant à la manière de météorologues qui traceraient la courbe d’un phénomène malheureux, mais inéluctable, tels une gigantesque tornade ou un météore filant vers la Terre à toute allure. Les milieux militants élaborent pourtant un autre discours, rejetant le déterminisme technologique et prônant plutôt le libre arbitre et la délibération démocratique. Loin de Luddite, ces mouvements épousent la technologie, tentant de profiter de sa capacité de suggestion pour humaniser les processus de travail, rééquilibrer la conciliation travail-famille, mettre l’accent sur le travail de reproduction ainsi que favoriser de nouveaux modes d’organisation. Une bataille épique fait rage et, bien que le rapport de force soit terriblement inégal, la résistance gagne en puissance. Cette conférence propose une typologie des efforts d’organisation actuels et s’attarde à quelques tensions stratégiques en présence.

Resisting the Future of Work: Building a Future for Workers

At the core of the Future of Work discourse there lies an authoritative determinism, a voice that tells us again and again that it is not possible to exercise democratic control over technology in economy and society. Mainstream economists acknowledge, even bemoan the Schumpeterian “creative destruction” of fissuring, automation, gig and platform economies, labor on demand schemes and management by algorithm and surveillance, but they do it as if they are weathermen, tracing the arc of a giant tornado—or meteor-- that is hurtling toward the earth, unfortunate but unstoppable. From the grassroots however, another discourse is emergent. One that rejects technological determinism in favor of democratic deliberation and choice. Far from Luddite, movements are embracing technology and seeking to take advantage of its affordances for humanizing labor processes, re-balancing work and family life, centering reproductive labor and facilitating new ways of organizing. An epic battle, albeit one with a wildly asymmetric power distribution is underway, but the resistance is growing. This paper sets forth a typology of current organizing efforts and considers some of the key strategic tensions between them.
