Intermittent fasting is NOT a diet, it's just a pattern of eating and not eating.

The way you lose weight with intermittent fasting is by controlling your insulin levels.

Insulin is a hormone that's released every time you eat food and it's a storage hormone.

It gets the energy from the food and puts it into your cells.

Any energy that's left over is stored in your body as fat, so fat is just stored energy to be used at a later time.

Since insulin is a storage hormone, in the presence of insulin you cannot burn fat and you cannot lose weight.

So how does intermittent fasting and insulin work for weight loss?

After not eating for 12 hours (fasting), your body's energy stores are depleted, and your insulin is low since you have not eaten.

This gives your body the ability to tap into fat stores for energy.

That's where the magic happens.

As you tap into your fat stores you start to lose weight.

The mistake most people make is that they eat too often because that's what they've been told to do.

But when you eat too often, your body is constantly pumping out insulin and in the presence of insulin you CANNOT burn fat and you CANNOT lose weight.

I personally do the intermittent fasting schedule of 16/8 where I eat within an 8 hour window and fast for 16 hours.

The majority of my fast happens while I sleep.

As you start fasting your body will start to down regulate the hunger hormone Ghrelin and you'll get used to not eating breakfast early in the morning.
