Carme Genesis
Together, the Hannover and Berlin-based artists Thomas Granseuer und Tomislav Topic constitute Quintessenz. Starting out as students the University of applied Science and Arts in Hildesheim, they developed a unique an unmistakeable signature style. With roots in both grafitti-culture and chromatics, Quintessenz combine painting, installation and conceptual art.
Space is the fundamental inspiration for Quintessenz. Their work not only uses shapes and patterns found in architecture, it interferes with its environment, changing the spectators perception of space. Quintessenz use vacant factory buildings as their canvases, with their murals covering entire facades. In every medium they use, both in public spaces and galleries, their abstract work shares one thing in common: their art creates space for its color. To Quintessenz, color is more than form. It is the content itself.
The invitation to exhibit an installation at C.A.R.M.E. is a very special occasion for Quintessenz. While there have been indoor installations before, there has never been one in a church before. Scince space and its unique context are the fundamental inspirations for Quintessenz, the very spirit of C.A.R.M.E. and its history become the concrete genesis of Quintessenz' artwork.
The installation „Carme Genesis“ that is presented in Brescia features the distinctive woven fabric that is the trademark for all of Quintessenz' installations. Taking the architecture and its rhythm as an outline, the installation makes use of the high ceiling and emphasizes the vacant space in the nave. The specific architectural situation at C.A.R.M.E. allowes the spectator to appreciate Quintessenz' artwork from different angles. Whether looked up on from underneath or experienced on the same height from gallery, the installation re-emerges in various ways.
Starting low above the floor, the installation eventually rises towards the apsis, symbolizing a bridge between ground and heaven and therefore corresponding to the former use of the building itself. By choosing different fainted and pastel variations of petrol, ocre and red, Quintessenz create an installation that caresses ones perception, an installation that stands out, without disturbing the space. Respecting ones heritage and building up on it, is what „Carme Genesis“ is all about.
