What is our relationship with the Ocean? And, how are we actually interconnected?

From April 9th until May 6th, 2020 the exhibition From the Coastline will feature the work of artists whose positions reflect on the entanglements between humans, things, and the marine environment.

From the Coastline is an invitation to understand the coastline both as a geographical place that brings us closer to the ocean, as well as a metaphorical one which allows us to explore hybrid positions between the natural and the artificial. At coastlines the planetary flow of our local actions becomes most visible, urging us to question and invert logics of profit through proposals of care from, outside, and beyond industrial narratives.

The portrait series In Your Face which Ocean. Now! realised in collaboration with the artist Swaantje Güntzel will make a central piece of the exhibition, accompanied by the artwork Microplastics by Swaantje Güntzel telling the story leading up to Microplastics II.

From the Coastline is an educational project accompanied by a public program offering visitors the chance to exchange ideas, participate in panel discussions, workshops, and talks. Our goal is to enhance dialogue between all levels of society — art, business, science, education, and politics — to re-discover our compassion for nature, and to activate collective action. Information about the program can be found at ocean-now.org/art-exhibition-from-the-coastline-save-the-date/

The exhibition is curated by Franca Lopez Barbera, a member of Ocean. Now!, and we are very grateful to be able to show From the Coastline at Haus der Statistik, in Berlin.

Within Ocean. Now!’s work overall, From the Coastline situates itself within the current campaign “Microplastics in Cosmetics and Cleaning Products”. The campaign aims at accelerating a legal ban that has been outstanding for years via a petition counting more than 118.000 signatures to date.
