On 5 April, ENSS students joined a province-wide secondary school walk-out to protest the education cuts announced by Education Minister Lisa Thompson in mid-March.
Many students are concerned that increased class sizes and reduction of school programs will negatively affect their education. Amanda Kidd, a student and protest organizer, is dead set against changes. “It’s hard to even consider cutting funds considering schools already lack funds in certain areas.”
Jamie Stuart loves the arts and wants consideration for those aspects of schooling that make school enjoyable. “We all really enjoy it and will fight to keep our education how it is.
Thompson made the announcement of cuts at the Ontario Science Centre in Toronto on Friday, Mar. 15. The average high school class size will be raised from 22 students to 28 students.
In addition, the government is also mandating that all high school students take four of 30 mandatory credits online. This requirement will take effect in the 2020-21 school year. According to the government, e-learning classes will average 35 students.
The union representing secondary school teachers warned that the gap between the planned changes and class sizes protected in their collective agreements is “unbridgeable.”
ENSS teachers in the periphery of the protest declined to comment on the changes and said they were present only to ensure student safety.
Madison, another student protestor, was happy with the turnout, which saw over 100 students take part. “I think it’s just really important that we’re all out here protesting… because if affects all of us.”
