European honeybees are the primary pollinators for carrot crops however the steady decline of the bee population means that alternative methods of pollination are needed. Emma Spurr observed the frequency and diversity of insects visiting flowering carrot seed crops and measured the pollen loads of these insects to determine their effectiveness. She found the hoverfly (Eristalis tenax) was a good pollinator for hybrid carrot crops.
