The methods of cleaning up oil spills are often costly, ineffective and toxic. This inspired Angelina Arora to look for a more effective and non-toxic way to clean up oil spills. She investigated using ferromagnetic nanoparticles and different strains of algae to separate the oil and water. She found Scenedesmus obliquus strain was the most effective in degrading the oil.
