Another abstract composition and mark making experiment, designed to loosen up your technique and develop composition.

I really like the combination of the fluidity of the ink and the marks made with the charcoal, whatever your particular style I recommend experimenting with these two mediums.

Method :

Begin to apply the drawing ink using a small brush in a free and loose style, I'm working with 2 colours here and always start with the lightest first. Make use of the whole surface of the paper work around the edges and towards the centre and vary the brush strokes, paint clean water onto the surface for interesting effects and flick ink or splatter. Don't overwork this, you want to create a foundation for the next stage with the charcoal, use the white of the paper to form the structure of the composition, leave aside to dry once complete.

The charcoal drawing now begins over the dry ink, use the ink brush marks to guide your drawing, work instinctively and just let the charcoal create loose and expressive lines, blend with your finger for softer tones and keep turning the paper to check for balance of light and dark.

This is a very useful and satisfying exercise and can help you understand how the creative instincts begin to take over, just enjoy the process and see what happens.

I recommend spraying the finished artwork with a suitable fixative to protect it from smudges.
