This study is an example of high-level interactivity which I describe as direct interaction.

Direct interaction features clearly perceivable linkages between action and reaction within the virtual environment. In such a paradigm, interactions are clearly repeatable – allowing the rules of interactivity to be learned and mastered by the participant.

In virtual music, direct interaction results in a shift of the participant’s role within the experience from active observer to interactive agent – or to use more musical terminology, to that of a performer/composer. To explore this paradigm, five inactive musical materials are attached to geometric shapes which are stacked upon a white surface within the VR environment. These ‘musical blocks’ can be picked up by the participant using gestural controllers and, when placed on an adjacent black surface, will become active and play a looping section of musical material. Removing a block from the black surface deactivates the associated musical material.

This relatively basic system allows an audience member to layer different musical materials together, creating various possible melodic, rhythmic and textural combinations. The system of interaction is perceivable, repeatable and learnable by the participant and, through their ability to start, stop and layer musical material, their role within the VR environment has shifted to one of performance and composition.
