TEACHING SUGGESTIONS
After “Tōia Mai”, students could sing “Utaina”, another very popular waiata of welcome at haka powhiri. In this waiata, a melodic introduction, usually sung by women, is followed by the men’s powerful, rhythmic chant coming through from the rear of the stage.
In the 1950s, an ancient haka, which is still present in the background of the second verse, was amended by adding the song lines you hear, turning “Utaina” into a classic concert-party entrance song.
Like “Tōia Mai”, this waiata uses the metaphor of a waka. Manuhiri (visitors) to a marae are likened collectively to the crew of a waka. The waka is pulled to a landing place, where it settles. When the manuhiri reach their destination (the marae), the waka is said to have arrived at its landing place.
This waiata acknowledges the manuhiri, the journey they have made, and where they have come from physically. It acknowledges them as individuals, but it also acknowledges their tribal connections, their nationalities, and links back to their ancestors and where they originate from.
nuku: Papatuanuku (Earth mother)
rangi: Ranginui (Sky father)
