87009 VC Project: Visualising Experience - Spring 2021 (Assessment 02)

'Space Adventure' by Phoebe Hay (13914611)
Tutor: Peter Wildman

Rationale:
My proposed interactive project for the Powerhouse Museum is a two part multi-sensory experience, relating to a Chinese ‘Toy racing car’ (1980s) and other objects part of this collection. Designed with the intention to provide an interactive and creatively stimulating experience for children and adolescents, this project hopes to increase youth participants engagement and recontextualise toys from the past within a contemporary space; reaffirming these keepsakes from the past and their ongoing significance within the lives of adults today. Part 1 of this interactive based activity involves using handheld digital devices (such as the iPad) to design both a pilot and spacecraft of your choice, this application allows complete customisation and creative control from the participants. Part 2 involves Virtual Reality technology in the form of a headset, here you will experience a space simulation experience using the design space craft as the base; moving around the exhibit space. The purpose of this is encouraging children to interact with these objects from their parents childhood and use this to shape their own understanding of their sentimental value. Space Adventure provides an environment for young participants to contribute and imagine their own relationship with these artefacts, interacting in a tangible and stimulating way.

This design is part of the student learning experience in 87009 or 87445 VC Design Studio: Visualising Experience Spring 2021 in the Faculty of Design Architecture and Built Environment (DAB) University of Technology Sydney (UTS) and is not a professional design outcome. This project was developed under the guidance of studio leaders and demonstrators. As a response to a notional assessment brief, it is not directly connected to the Powerhouse Museum.
