S.P.A.M. JAM

In 1942, Bayard Rustin, a Quaker and a leader in the American Civil Rights Movement, raised the demand that we "speak truth to power". In 1983, in a lecture titled, "Fearless Speech", philosopher and critical theorist Michel Foucault elaborated the theme of Rustin’s call in its relation to frankness, truth-telling, criticism, and duty; grouped together under the ancient Greek word: parrhesia.

But to where would we address our voice today? Where does power sit these days? In government? Or in the informational torrents which wash against the crumbling edifice of reason. Yet rather than empowering the oppressed masses, if anything, the proliferation of online channels seems to corrode any disclosure which could unsettle the status quo and re-balance the scales. Much as the administrators of the network know, these tides set words and worlds adrift; each utterance untethered in the digital fluidics of an age in which meaning is little more than a moving target to be swiped at.

When shouting into the cloud becomes pissing in the wind the only way past is through. If our societies of control are sustained through an ambient architecture, then we must find new ways of modulating the noise field, of building structures in which we can shelter and plan; new anarchitectures; new heterotopias, born out of the very dissonance which would constrict us.

If parrhesia once described the bravery of a solo voice against a single force. Then a multitudinous oppression should be met with chorus of dissent. A collective jamming of the signal; a co-produced glitch, a dissonant polyrhythm set against a discordant song. In defiance of the individualisation of our call, the response to repression should be played amongst allies.

We invite you to a rehearsal of a people yet to come in a place still being built. An unspoken word night of joyous resistance, of reverberation and resonance, of Social Parrhesia As Musical JAM.
