Prayer (Robert Schumann)
Soprano: Britt Truyts
Piano & Paintings: Koen Broucke
Excerpt from ‘Portrait of a Lady’ #3,
an exhibition with the duration of a song-recital
By means of paintings and songs, a kaleidoscopic portrait of strong women throughout time is sketched. The performance highlights the courageous role of Joan of Arc and Mary Stuart who dared to speak out publicly and revolt, and of Mary, Saint Veronica and the Women of Jerusalem in the Passion of Jesus. One by one, women who dared to rebel against the power structures of their time using their own brainpower, imagination and passion.
Leitmotifs throughout the performance are the song cycle Gedichte der Königin Maria Stuart by Robert Schumann and parts of the work Via Crucis by Franz Liszt. There is also music by Reynaldo Hahn, Gurdjieff/de Hartmann, Arvo Pärt, John Lennon and Leonard Cohen.
