This living jewel is a wild Oophaga sylvatica, subspecies Simón Bolívar, from northwest Ecuador, the southern part of its range. I was trying to get a video of him singing. He moved around a lot, but did not try to hide. It was not until I saw the video on a large screen that I could see he was eating tiny ants. These are likely one of the sources of the alcoloids the frog uses in its skin to be unpalaitable to predators. This guy appeared to have a partner nearby. This log was in a narrow strip of semi-wild habitat along a ditch isolated between an expanding highway and a pulp-wood plantation. Practically all of the subspecies range is forest converted to palm oil and pulp wood plantation where chemical herbicides and pesticides are used excessively.
