A ship's manifest contains details of goods loaded and discharged. But a ship carries much more than just physical cargo. Shetland's fiddle music has long been shaped by the islands' place at the 'crossroads of the sea'. Catriona Macdonald grew up with this music, and has long been fascinated by the connection between fiddle and sea.

This film is part of the New Connections Across the Northern Isles series.

It has been developed out of research for Curating Heritage for Sustainable Communities in Highly Vulnerable Environments: The Case of Scotland's Northern Isles, carried out by Catherine McCullagh, and supervised by the Intercultural Research Centre at Heriot-Watt University; the Institute for Northern Studies, UHI; and Shetland Museum and Archives, Ms McCullagh's research was funded through a SGSAH ARC Studentship.

New Connections Across the Northern Isles is a partnership project between Heriot-Watt IRC, Institute for Northern Studies UHI and Shetland Museum and Archives, and The Orkney Museum. The partners have collaborated with Cuninningsburgh History Group; the Old Haa; Orkney Historic Boat Society; and Westray Heritage Centre, with support from Orkney Library and Archive, to co-curate a virtual museum of aspects of maritime heritages across Orkney and Shetland.

The New Connections Across the Northern Isles film series has been made possible through funding from Museums Galleries Scotland's Museum Development Fund, and the Hugh Fraser Foundation.

The New Connections team is grateful to Learning for Sustainability Scotland for their advice.
