This song is a great favourite of children because of its humorous story-line and sound effects. It provides a perfect opportunity to create a performance using music, drama and dance with scenery, props and costumes to match. Encourage the children’s creativity by suggesting they could expand it into a whole story filled with martian adventures

It’s a country song performed by Wellington actor, Michael Wilson in a Slim Dusty style and uses some colloquial language such as “me and my cobbers”, “cops and robbers” “all youse guys inside.” Discuss with children the use of artistic licence in songwriting. They could also investigate the idioms, “blood drained from our face,” “stomachs hit the floor” and what is meant by those phrases.

Included in the song are some scientific concepts that some children may like to pursue such as ‘warp factor five,’ ‘light year’, interstellar time’ and the theories of Albert Einstein. Another interesting discussion arising from this song would be the stories children have heard about the existence of UFOs.

The song has an easy melody for instrumentalists to play and simple guitar chords for young guitarists so the ‘band’ could have their own verse and add appropriate sound effects.
