Modules is a work for an ensemble of non-specific instruments with four or more players commissioned by Metropolis Ensemble for Biophony. It was conceived by Mike Ladouceur who co-wrote the piece with Elissar Hanna and Alessandro Apolloni. The artwork was created by Elissar Hanna. The work consists of different cells of music created and formatted in collaboration with the three composers. Each composer was given four sets of tasks at the start of the process: first, create five 6-8 bar melodies; second, write five 4-6 bar ideas; and third, compose ten 1-3 bar fragments. Composers were given a choice of various meters, but all cells were conceived at the same tempo (110 bpm).
Next, all 240 cells were placed in a musical matrix. The ideas were laid out in their original form, in retrograde, inversion, and retrograde inversion. The composers created a sequential pattern travelling through the cells generating four linear strings of material, one for each individual part. These strings were then extracted from the matrix and placed in a four part score, and time signatures were dissolved so that all material was in 4/4.
