Making new work look old is an absolute art in itself. You can’t just paint something and throw dust over it. The way finished paint will crack, bleed and fade over time is magical. The process where sunlight bleaches paint, and the way mold and dirt layer over surfaces makes them so much more interesting. I have learned tricks over the years, and they were the perfect arsenal to bring along when approaching the gorgeous new @capano.residential property along the banks of the Brandywine in Wilmington, DE. I had already done a couple of vintage-inspired works to brand the property in art-adverts, but being in the physical space was different. The bricks were actual salvage, so it seemed like the perfect surface to marry an ode to the former property that these luxury apartments replaced.
The Bancroft Mills Company had an expansive factory along the exact location for almost 200 years. The business started as a textile and cotton finishing mill and by 1890 was the largest in the US. The original company was sold in 1961, but their sponsorship of the #missamerica pageants and success of particular fabrics (#banlon and #everglaze ) made it into the designs. These are a nod to the past. A visual song that honors the previous property, while viably looking just as young as it would have, had it been painted 70 years ago.
