KRISPERIENCE. A Museum Interactive Experience
Kris or Keris is a traditional Javanese dagger originating in Java. Instead of being used for battle, this dagger is valued more for its supernatural powers. Kris represents Shiva, the god of destruction and recreation who is usually symbolised as a snake. It is believed that Shiva lives inside the dagger. There are two types of kris, straight and waved. The straight one symbolises the Shiva on meditation, while the waved one symbolises Shiva on the action.
My proposed installation at the Powerhouse Museum offers a unique virtual experience of meeting the spiritual representation of Kris, Shiva. This proposal is designed for visitors, especially children, and young adults to learn the cultural and spiritual aspects of a kris while having fun and exploring possibilities with AR technology. In this experience, the visitors will be assigned a simple task to draw a wavy pattern virtually in the AR to summon Shiva. As the object is a waved kris, the task to draw the wavy pattern relates back to the belief of a waved kris representing Shiva in action.
This installation features the use of AR technology and devices like a mobile phone and large TV screen to create an interactive experience based on the kris itself. The AR interactions involve motion tracking and responsive AR elements that are used to create a fun and engaging experience for the visitors.
This design is part of the student learning experience in 87009 or 87445 VC Design Studio: Visualising Experience Spring 2021 in the Faculty of Design Architecture and Built Environment (DAB) University of Technology Sydney (UTS) and is not a professional design outcome. This project was developed under the guidance of studio leaders and demonstrators. As a response to a notional assessment brief, it is not directly connected to the Powerhouse Museum.
