The second song shared with us as part of our Kohala Mountain Music Project is “Lovely Gardenia,” co-composed by William “Duddy” Pili Hussey. Born in Kohala in 1913, Hussey and a fellow Kohala Ditch worker composed Lovely Gardenia, inspired by the gardenia bushes that grew and bloomed around the ditch cabins in Honokane Mauka. “On a still night, you can smell the gardenias throughout the valley,” recalls Husseyʻs daughter, Nani Hussey Svendsen. "I can see how it would stir up a musician to write a song, and at the same time he’s thinking about the people that he’s missing, so Lovely Gardenia not only speaks of the gardenia, but of the loved one that you’re not with."
