Okay.
Picture this.
KK is 20 - she is a go go dancer in New York doing very well for herself and meets the love of her life , a handsome mechanic (again, I have so many amazing stories and details deserving of more space than Instagram allows).
He asks her to marry him. She says yes.
He drops off dinner to her before she goes on stage shortly after the proposal some rainy summer night, hydroplanes on his drive home and is killed instantly.
I should also mention Kim and KK are both (still) atheists.
Turns out his funeral was very religious, filled with hope and assurance that he is now “In a better place”.
This does not sit well with kk.
Something happened at his funeral which is the only incident when pressed about she does not give detail.
All I know is that the idea of Eric’s family spinning him being dead into a positive thing would not have sat well with her.
The closest she got to explaing it to me recently was when she was going through her closet offering me whatever she thought I may like -
She was excited when she found something - her tone changed and she told me
“Want to see the most beautiful thing I own? Its a modest nighty from the 20’s and I bought it for my wedding night. I never got to wear it because I never had a wedding. There it is - there’s the sad little story.”
Then on Christmas night I showed her and Kim the song daughters by Paul Simon and say I want to play it at my wedding.
Very quickly she tells me
“Honey, you may never get married.”
I say I know.
Then she says in a completely different tone of voice
“......but you can still buy a nice nighty for your wedding night.”
Simultaneously, I have never felt so uplifted but also like I was being stabbed a thousand times in the heart with a hot fork.
