TEACHING SUGGESTIONS
This traditional Cook Islands Maori song is an example of an 'Tmene 'aka 'aravei (welcome song) and a 'Tmene kapa rima (action song). It can be used to welcome people in relatively formal settings, for example, at school assemblies or when welcoming parents into schools. You will need to dividethe singing group into two for the part where the verse and chorus are sung together. This will give the students an experience of singing two parts in harmony. It's also an easy partner song for two voices.
The instrumental backing features a good example of Cook Islands drumming, which means that this song can be used as a Listening resource. Ask the students to listen to and interpret the rhythms. Flowers play an important part in the cultures of the Cook Islands. They express love and friendship. A group who perform this song for a formal occasion may put a garland of flowers, greenery, or shells around the necks of their guests. In the line ''Flowers, flowers of Rarotonga”, "Rarotonga” can be replaced by the name of the school or of the place where the song is being performed.
"Kia Orana” can be translated as:
Flowers, flowers of Rarotonga.
Flowers, flowers of Rarotonga.
Greetings, greetings.
Greetings, greetings.
Accept this garland of
Flowers, flowers of Rarotonga.
Greetings to our parents.
Greetings to our friends.
Accept this garland of
