First time I ever heard Iris Dement was in the final episode of Northern Exposure. I went to my local record store and found her debut, “Infamous Angel.” I’d never heard a voice so unique, yet so familiar. I felt like we could’ve have been neighbors. 25 years later, I still feel that way! And this record holds up nicely. It doesn’t sound the least bit dated. That’s what happens when you got timeless songs with the right cast of characters like Jerry Douglas, Roy Husky Jr., Emmylou Harris and producer Jim Rooney. Every song on this record is great, all telling stories about small-town life, family, and religion. Check out tracks like “Let The Mystery Be” or the title track OR that first song I heard on TV “Our Town” which might be one of the greatest Americana songs ever written. Some artist never get to write that ONE song that defines them, Iris Dement got it on her first try.
